Prof. Xijing Wang has been selected as a Rising Star of the Association for Psychological Science (APS)

The APS Rising Star designation is presented to outstanding APS Members in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD, based on criteria such as impactful publications, recognition from peers, significant discoveries or theoretical contributions, commitment to diversity in science, and independence from mentors. Prof. Wang’s innovative work on objectification and inequality has advanced the field of social psychology and signals great potential for their continued contributions.

Applications for 2024/25 SS Postgraduate Programmes

Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme for MSocSc Psychology in 2024/25

The MSocSc Psychology programme is one of the eligible programmes in the Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme (the Scheme) funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in the 2024/25 academic year. All local Hong Kong residents pursuing full-time, part-time or combined study in MSocSc Psychology can apply for the fellowships. Successful candidates will be awarded up to HK$120,000 of tuition waiver.

Movie Nights: A Window into Different Walks of Life

To cultivate a sense of human concern and social responsibility among our students, movie nights were organized by SS in November 2023. A hundred students actively attended the screenings of two thought-provoking films: "The Narrow Road" and "In Broad Daylight". The students not only had insightful sharing with the directors of the films, Mr. Lam Sum and Mr. Lawrence Kan respectively, but also meaningful dialogue with a group of cleaners served by Caritas Labour-Friendly Communities Project.

Youth Forum

Youth Mental Health Forum

A youth forum on mental health was held on 14 October 2023 by Professor Sylvia Kwok, Associate Head of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong. The forum is part of a “Children and Youth Mental Health Project” in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Work of the University of Calgary, Canada.

According to metrics complied by Stanford University and the updated data published on 4 Oct., 2023, Prof. Sylvia Kwok and Dr. Simon Fung in our department are listed among the top 2% of the most highly cited scientists in the world (i.e., top 2% in the world in their own areas of specialty).
Prof. Sylvia Kwok is ranked top 1.3 % in the subfield of Social Work. Dr. Simon Fung is ranked top 1.5% in the subfield of Toxicology/Biomedical Research.

Supporting caregivers with evidence-based tools and programs

CityU team developed the scientific Caregiver Support Model (CSM) and Psycho-education Program on Empowerment (PPE) for caregivers of frail older adults. Project 2.0 aims to disseminate validated tools and practices to social workers and NGOs.

Joint Book Sharing Forum on Hong Kong Corrections by SS and CSD

The Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SS) collaborated with the Correctional Services Department (CSD) to organize a Book Sharing Forum on 30 May 2023. The event attracted more than 250 scholars, students and professionals working in the criminal justice system.


JUPAS Consultation Day 2023

On the JUPAS Consultation Day on 20 May 2023, guests ranging from parents to secondary school students visited the booth of SS to interact with our faculty members and student representatives.


CityU Psychology Student Research Conference 2023

16 Psychology students from the SS Department joined the CityU Psychology Student Research Conference on 16 May to present their final year project and on-going research work in a poster presentation session. The 2-hour poster session was fueled with dynamic and fruitful discussions among our students, staff, faculty members, and guests from other departments. It was a memorable experience to highlight what our students have proudly achieved in the past few years and prepare them for a new yet exciting chapter ahead.
