
CityU Psychology Student Research Conference 2023
16 Psychology students from the SS Department joined the CityU Psychology Student Research Conference on 16 May to present their final year project and on-going research work in a poster presentation session. The 2-hour poster session was fueled with dynamic and fruitful discussions among our students, staff, faculty members, and guests from other departments. It was a memorable experience to highlight what our students have proudly achieved in the past few years and prepare them for a new yet exciting chapter ahead.

Balancing sports and studies
Mr. Ho Kwan Kit Anson was admitted to CityU in September 2022 through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) scheme. He is currently balancing playing for the Hong Kong table tennis team with his studies in the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

13 SS final year students from different disciplines took part as paper or poster presenters in the World Conference on Undergraduate Research and British Conference on Undergraduate Research (WorldCUR-BCUR) from April 3 to 6, 2023.

The first meeting of Neuroscience and Social and Behvioural Sciences Interdepartmental Seminar Series
The first meeting of Neuroscience and Social and Behavioral Sciences Interdepartmental Seminar Series was held on 29th March 2023 in LI 3610. In this meeting, Prof. Jan Schnupp (NS) and his collaborator Dr. Ryszard Auksztulewicz, as well as Dr. Chun-Yu TSE (SS) presented their works on the topic: Automatic change detection - from Neuroscience to Psychology and Social Sciences and shared their current and future collaborative research plan.

Mediating Criminology, Psychology & Creative Media: Screening of ‘The Sparring Partners’
SS co-organised a movie screening of ‘Sparring Partners’ with the School of Creative Media on March 30, 2023. The movie touches upon social, criminological and psychological issues relevant to students’ learning. Professor Allen, the Dean of the School of Creative Media, a practicing barrister (Mr. Ricky Li), and an experienced clinical psychologist (Dr. Ephraem Tsui) shared their professional insights with students after the screening.

Visit from the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University
Three visitors from the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University including Prof. Liu Qinglong, Mr. Huang zhenping, Ms. Qu Na, and the President of China Philanthropy Times Mr. Zhao Quanjun visited SS Department on 27 March 2023 Monday. They shared with us the most up-to-date social work professional development in China and the upcoming World Philanthropy Forum organized in Hong Kong in September 2023. In the Forum, mechanisms for facilitating social work collaborations among Chinese societies will also be discussed with the concerted contribution from Chinese scholars around the globe. Both sides agreed to keep communication on future collaboration.

Emotion regulation in aging: What I used to think, what I think now, and where I think we should go next
Prof. Derek M. Isaacowitz, professor of psychology at the Northeastern University, USA, was invited to deliver a research seminar on emotion regulation in aging on 8 March 2023. His talk was attended by about 40 faculty members and students from SS, PIA, LT, COM, computer science, and information system. The audience showed great interest in his studies involving the examination of younger, middle-aged and older adults, and the utilization of mixed research methods, such as lab experiments, eye-tracking, and experience sampling methods.

Visit of psychology professors from the University of Science and Technology of China
Three distinguished professors from the Psychology Department at the University of Science and Technology of China, including Prof. Yan KONG (acting head), Prof. Xiaosong HE (associate head), and Prof. Jue WANG, visited the SS departments on 17 Feb (Fri). They shared their research experiences on gifted education, psychometrics, and neuroscience with colleagues who have similar interests. The two departments planned to conduct more academic exchanges (e.g., seminars, fund applications) to strengthen their collaboration.

Junior Outstanding Social Worker Award
“Mr. Lui Ka Chun, 2018 graduate of BSSSW, and Miss Chan Kane, 2019 graduate of BASW, got the Junior Outstanding Social Worker Awards presented by the Hong Kong Social Workers Association (HKSWA). The award is to recognize those junior social workers who have outstanding performance and make great contribution to the profession and society.”

Meet and Greet Session with Student Leaders of SS
13 SS student leaders from different years and disciplines had an enjoyable afternoon with SS academic staff on 2 Feb 2023. Through meaningful and in-depth sharing on student development and interactive games, we had deeper understanding of one another and built closer bonding.
