Hong Kong’s first and only UGC-funded degree in Crime Science is accepting admissions for Semester A 2025. Our new programme supports practical solutions to current and emerging crime problems, as well as training a new generation of law enforcement and security professionals in crime prevention, security practices, global policing, crime analytics and cyber & future crimes. Visitors enjoyed activities organised by SS at CityUHK Undergraduate Info Day 2024

CityUHK Undergraduate Info Day 2024 was successfully held. Various activities were organised by the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SS). Over 1,200 visitors joined the admission talks on our undergraduate programmes, dialogue sessions with crime scientists/sociologists, psychologists and social workers, and enjoyed the Psychology Lab demonstration. British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) 2024

A group of 5 senior students from the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences attended the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) 2024 in London, UK. They showcased their final year projects through oral and poster presentations, joining 350 undergraduates from over 15 countries. The students found the conference experience valuable for their academic learning and personal development. In preparation, they underwent pre-trip training and participated in daily debriefings. The group also visited the Division of Psychology & Language Sciences at University College London. After the trip, the students shared their findings by setting up an interactive booth and participating in the CityU Psychology Student Research Conference 2024. Overall, this was a significant event that enhanced the students' academic skills and connections with researchers from diverse fields.

15 Psychology students from the SS Department joined the CityU Psychology Student Research Conference on 14 May 2024 to present their final year project and on-going research work in a poster presentation session. The 2-hour poster session was fueled with dynamic and fruitful discussions among our students, staff, faculty members, and guests. It was a memorable experience to highlight what our students have proudly achieved in the past few years and prepare them for a new yet exciting chapter ahead.

Prof. Xijing Wang has been selected as a Rising Star of the Association for Psychological Science (APS)

The APS Rising Star designation is presented to outstanding APS Members in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD, based on criteria such as impactful publications, recognition from peers, significant discoveries or theoretical contributions, commitment to diversity in science, and independence from mentors. Prof. Wang’s innovative work on objectification and inequality has advanced the field of social psychology and signals great potential for their continued contributions.

Youth Mental Health Forum

A youth forum on mental health was held on 14 October 2023 by Professor Sylvia Kwok, Associate Head of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong. The forum is part of a “Children and Youth Mental Health Project” in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Work of the University of Calgary, Canada.

According to metrics complied by Stanford University and the updated data published on 4 Oct., 2023, Prof. Sylvia Kwok and Dr. Simon Fung in our department are listed among the top 2% of the most highly cited scientists in the world (i.e., top 2% in the world in their own areas of specialty).
Prof. Sylvia Kwok is ranked top 1.3 % in the subfield of Social Work. Dr. Simon Fung is ranked top 1.5% in the subfield of Toxicology/Biomedical Research.

Supporting caregivers with evidence-based tools and programs

CityU team developed the scientific Caregiver Support Model (CSM) and Psycho-education Program on Empowerment (PPE) for caregivers of frail older adults. Project 2.0 aims to disseminate validated tools and practices to social workers and NGOs.
