Psychology at CityU is a thriving discipline that integrates the study of the brain, mind and behaviour to address complex issues concerning human behaviours with interdisciplinary perspectives.

Psychological knowledge is actively transferred to and translated into impact on the real world via teaching in the psychology programs, training of graduate students, and cutting-edge research.

Teaching focuses on the integration of theory and research skills to produce a new generation of students who are capable of addressing complex psychological/behavioural issues with an interdisciplinary perspective. The psychology discipline currently offers 3 programs at different levels which are catered for students with different aspirations in pursuing training in psychology.

Research Volunteer Scheme is a non-credit bearing scheme initiated by the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences to provide students an opportunity to participate in faculty-led projects and gain hands-on research experiences. Research aims at providing timely responses to emerging issues to speed up scientific knowledge into individual and community benefits. Most of the research is funded by competitive external research grants (e.g., GRFs or General Research Funds of the UGC) and has led to impactful publications and deliverables for specific beneficiaries in the community.

The psychology discipline has received a total of 16 GRFs, 1 CRF, 1 NSFC-SRI, 1 PPR and 1 HRMF over the last five years. This has generated a number of publications addressing some of the most concerned issues in the local context.
The development a play-based assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot scheme of the On-site Pre-School Rehabilitation Services delivered by the Social Welfare Department under the Labour and Welfare Bureau. The scheme has been regularized as one of the four government subvented services for 7,000 young children with special needs in over 500 kindergartens in Hong Kong since Oct 2018.
The design of training manuals for building personal and family resilience as well as well-being outcomes, which have been used by more than 1,500 families in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Psychology Laboratories

This establishment consists of multiple laboratories with control rooms, a multi-purpose meeting room, and a reception area. The laboratories are also equipped with psychophysiological equipment, eye tracker, brain imaging, and brain stimulation facilities for social, behavioural, psychological, and brain studies as well as practical skills and counselling training. This can be regarded as the key infrastructure that provides a hub for facilitating research among students and staff members, and for the integration of teaching and research.
