Students are provided with opportunities to participate in self-discovery and knowledge building, including acquiring knowledge in classrooms, conducting independent research projects in local community, and applying theories into practices through local and overseas internships. Students may also develop an interest in discovery and innovation to benefit society by providing solutions for private and public sectors.
The criminology programme aims to produce graduates with a broad knowledge required to reflect on the concept of crime; professional competence to protect the public and maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest cities in the world; and skills to enable them to function effectively as personnel in the fields of policing, anti-corruption, correctional services, compliance, private security, and conflict management. They will be equipped with knowledge and skills necessary to undertake managerial and executive responsibilities within the crime prevention, regulatory compliance, and security professions.
Research and Expertise
Faculty members in the criminology discipline have established their reputation in a wide spectrum of criminology research, including crime prevention, triad studies, school and cyber bullying, restorative justice, juvenile and youth justice, socio-legal studies, crime control in the Greater China Region, and violent and sexual offending. Over the years, professors in criminology have made tremendous contribution to the development of criminal justice and offender rehabilitation policies in local and overseas communities including Hong Kong, and nearby jurisdictions within the Asia-Pacific region. Faculty members are now serving as either editor or member in the editorial board of many prestigious international journals. Some faculty members have served or are serving in the Government committees such as committees related to ICAC, Central Fight Crime, Action Committee Against Narcotics, Offender’s Post-release Supervision, and Hong Kong Police College.
